Past conferences

Te Wai Māori Trust have been hosting the Māori Freshwater Fisheries Conference since 2015. In its early days, the event was known as the National Māori Tuna Conference (2015, 2017), but has been held in the name of the Māori Freshwater Fisheries Conference since 2019.

Not only are these conferences an opportunity for wai māori kaitiaki to gather from all around Aotearoa, they also provide lasting taonga as resources so that we can continue to learn, share expertise and inspire the next generation of wai māori protectors.

Building upon a great hui in Taupō, the 2023 Māori Freshwater Fisheries Conference was held in Wakatū. Over 230 kaitiaki wai māori gathered under the kaupapa of He Waimāreparepa’ – creating tomorrow for our mokopuna through ripples in the water.

After a three-year hiatua die toe COVID-19, the Māori Freshwater Fisheries Conference returned. This time co-hosted by Ngāti Tuwharetoa, iwi, hapū, whānau and wai Māori kaitiaki gathered at the Great Lake Centre in Taupō around to theme of “Ngā Waiherehere” – the combining of many streams, flowing out to the moana as one.
