Māori Freshwater Fisheries Conference

3 & 4 September 2019

The third Te Wai Māori freshwater fisheries conference was held in Whangarei in September 2019. The theme was ‘the vulnerability of our taonga freshwater species to a changing climate’.

Described as the greatest threat to humanity, climate change poses a threat to our planet, how and where we live, our mātauranga, and our taonga species. But a changing climate doesn’t just mean global warming; within a generation we are observing more frequent and severe weather events, ocean warming and acidification, and the inability of species to adapt in a relatively short time.

This conference looked at how a changing climate might affect our taonga freshwater species, and how our traditional relationships with those taonga may need to change.

Presentations

We had an amazing variety of kaikōrero over two-days. You’ll find a few of the presentations from our conference below, and all of the presentations from our previous conference on our YouTube channel.
